Death of Ricardo Legorreta Vilchis, UIA gold medallist

Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta passed away in Mexico, on 30 December 2011, aged 80.

Ricardo Legorreta was honoured with the most prestigious awards bestowed on architects, notably the UIA Gold Medal that he received in 1999, and more recently, in 2011, the Praemium Imperiale for architecture awarded by the Japan Art Association.

Combining modernist geometric shapes with the Mexican tradition, he signed over a hundred works in Mexico and around the world. Camino Real Hotel in Mexico city, his first work, is also the most emblematic and set the tone for his architecture. Characterised by vivid and contrasting colours, his architecture is designed around subtle interior spaces, harmoniously laid out.

His youngest son, Victor, had been working alongside him for the past few years. The UIA addresses its most sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
