The UIA and RIAI Launch the Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Awards 2017

The International Union of Architects (UIA) has launched the second edition of the ‘Friendly and Inclusive Spaces’ Awards. The Awards recognise and promote inclusive design – from buildings and public spaces to research – and are open to all architect members of UIA member sections. Entries can be submitted online, from 28 September until 20 December 2016, at https://uiafriendlyspaces.awardsplatform.com/.

Symposium on Asian Age-friendly City at ARCASIA 17

With the support of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), UIA Region IV will organize a “UIA Symposium cum Region IV meeting” on Sept 28, 2016 to coincide with ARCASIA The 17th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA17) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (www.aca17hk.com). There will be overall 300+ delegates attending this Symposium from the Asia-Pacific region.

UIA Prize Friendly spaces accessible to all

The UIA Work Programme, “Architecture for All” has organized, for the occasion of the UIA 25th Congress in Durban, an international award to recognize constructions uniting architectural quality and accessibility and whose designers have provided all users, without discrimination, quality of life and function. The attractive, inclusive and sustainable buildings should have been completed on 1 January 2009.  Part of the prize also recognizes architects whose research has contributed to promote and advance the theory and practice of universal design.

International Architecture Biennial Costa Rica

The twelfth edition of this international biennial will take place in San José, on 14 - 17 May 2014, on the theme of accessibility for all. Architects from around the world are invited to participate and present their works in the following categories: architecture, accessible urban planning, restoring heritage sites, landscape planning, research, and non-built projects.  The deadline for presenter registration is 27 February; and propositions must be sent by 2 March 2014. A special session is reserved for students of architecture.

The UIA announces the launch of its international award “Friendly Spaces Accessible to All”

This award celebrates excellence in architecture that is accessible to all and respects the principles of universal design. The award will be presented to completed projects that have created attractive, inclusive and sustainable environments where the recognition of human diversity through friendly architectural expression has been central to the design process.

UIA Work Programme Architecture for All Region I Accessibility in Europe

On 24 & 25 March 2013, the Belgian city of Hasselt will host a meeting of the regional UIA work programme Architecture for All, followed by a lunch/debate on universal design in Brussels with members of the European Parliament. Two members of this work programme, David Bonnet and Grainne Shaffrey, will speak at the ICOMOS symposium in Paris on 21 & 22 March, that will examine How to make European architectural and urban heritage accessible?.

President Obama names Michel Graves to a key post

Architect Michael Graves was recently appointed by the American president to lead the federal agency that treats issues of accessibility, the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board. Micheal Graves’s works and realisations have earned him numerous prizes including the prestigious AIA Gold Medal in 2001. When confronted with his paralysis, he became determined to use his new perspective to improve accessibility in architecture and urban design.
