On 12 May 2017, the Prix Versailles announced the winners for the 2017 Edition at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

 

The Prize, endorsed for the first time this year by the UIA, included a regional round as well as a final round.  70 Continental winners from thirty-five countries and six continents were present at the ceremony on 12 May.

 

The international jury panel for the final round of the prize included François de Mazières, Mayor of the city of Versailles, architect Manuelle Gautrand (France), fashion designer Guo Pei (China), Pritzker Architecture Prize winners Toyo Ito (2013) from Japan and Wang Shu (2012) from China, essayist and writer Gilles Lipovetsky (France), chef-restaurateur Guy Savoy (France) and Minja Yang.

 

The jury evaluated entries in four categories:  Shops and Stores, Shopping Malls, Hotels and Restaurants.  Each category also included “Special Prizes” for Interior and Exterior.

 

The following awards were attributed to the following:

 

In the Shops and Stores category

  • Dior Miami (Miami, Florida, USA) by BarbaritoBancel Architects (France) received the Prix Versailles for 2017,
  • Special Prize Interior – Hangzhou Zhongshuge (Hangzhou, China) by X+Living (China)
  • Special prize Exterior – Chanel temporary store (Amsterdam, Netherlands) by MVRDV (the Netherlands)

 

In the Shopping Malls category

  • Tokyo Plaza Ginza (Tokyo, Japan) by Nikken Sekkei (Japan) received the Prix Versailles for 2017
  • Special Prize Interior – ARG Shopping Mall (Tehran, Iran) by arsh4d studio (Iran)
  • Special prize Exterior – Lideta Mercato (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) by Vilalta Arquitectura (Spain)

 

In the Hotels category

  • Chablé – Yucatan Peninsula (Chocholá, Mexico) by Jorge Borja and Paulina Morán (Mexico) received the Prix Versailles for 2017
  • Special Prize Interior – Spedition (Thun, Switzerland) by Stylt, Trampoli (Sweden)
  • Special Prize Exterior – Mar Adentro (San José del Cabo, Mexico) by Miguel Ángel Aragonés (Mexico)

 

In the Restaurants category

  • Illusion (Doha, Qatar) by the Rockwell Group (USA) received the Prix Versailles for 2017
  • Special Prize Interior – Shukufuku Japanese Bento (Melbourne, Australia) by Rptecture Architects (Australia)
  • Special Prize Exterior – The Dancing Pavilion (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), by Estudio Guto Requena (Brazil)

 


The awards ceremony was preceded by a conference at UNESCO on 11 May at which UIA Secretary General Thomas Vonier addressed attendees on the importance of commercial architecture to the vitality of the urban space, highlighting buildings and developments that “exalt ordinary experience.”
