Hoop Cup 2012 International Student Competition in Architectural Design: Architecture in Transformation

Cultural Complex

Meng Jie and Zhang Zhizhe, students at Tianjin University, are the winners of the 2012 Hoop Cup, international competition open to students worldwide. Organised by the school of architecture of Tianjin University and Urban Environment Design (UED), a Chinese press group, the theme of the competition was urban transformation.

With their project ‘patching the city’, Meng Jie and Zhang Zhizhe not only repair but rebuild the breach in the old city wall creating a positive space linking the old and new parts of the city. A universally applicable architectural solution, with subtle studies of varied textures, facades, openings and resultant light and views.

Three second prizes were awarded to:

  • Wu Yang and Wang Qing of Xian University proposing the insertion of cultural activities into an used dockland area
  • Shen Yiting and Wang Nanyu, Tianjin University, for the transformation of an island situated in a river between China and Viet Nam into a border trading post and place for cultural exchange between the two countries.
