Architect Fernando Donis wins the ThyssenKrup Elevator award in Dubai

Launched in April 2008 by Dubai Municipality and ThyssenKrupp Elevator, the competition for the design of a Tall Emblem Structure in Dubai was an outstanding success with 926 proposals submitted by architects worldwide to the international jury.

Mexican architect Fernando Donis carried off the first prize, worth 100 000 US$, for his project entitled ‘Dubai Frame’ that in the words of its author: “captures the ever-changing portrait of this city.”

The second prize, worth 50 000 US$ was awarded to the Chinese architect Luo Siwei for his "Magic Mirror" proposal, a twisted ring structure of 160 metres diametre.

Three third prizes each worth 20 000 US$ were awarded: to Alejandro Rios (Spain) for ‘The Mirage’; to the team composed of Ferran Yusta (The Netherlands) and Marta Pozo (France) for "Big Beam"; to Sino-Canadian architect Hongbo Lu's ‘The Flying Colours of Dubai’.

This Award was organised with the support of the International Union of Architects who was represented on the jury by Jaime Duro Pifarre, UIA past President.

Located in Za’abeel technology park, the structure is to be a tourist attraction, exceptional in its conception and design. The programme included cultural and leisure spaces, theatres and conference facilities. The design must take into account the local climatic conditions, the urban and landscape aspects, apply the principes of passive energy construction and reply to the sismic restrictions of the region.
