Design of place Lalla Yeddouna in Fez: Mossessian & partners and Yassir Khalil Studio winners

Mossessian & partners, (London, United Kingdom) with Yassir Khalil Studio, (Casablanca, Morocco) carried off the first prize in the competition for the Rehabilitation of Place Lalla Yeddouna in the Medina of Fez, Morocco.

This international competition is part of a project for economic and social development in this sector by highlighting its cultural, craftwork and tourism potential. The aim is to make of Place Lalla Yeddouna, included on the UNESCO world heritage list, the vibrant hub for the community and the central tourist point of the Medina. The two stage competiton, open and anonymous, was launched with the support of the International Union of Architects.

Close to 1400 architects registered and 175 projects were submitted to the jury at the end of the first stage. The authors of the eight projects showing the greatest development potential were selected to compete in the second phase.

The international jury was composed of eminent personnalities representing the
Moroccas and Fez authorities
, the United States Ambassador to Morocco as well as the following architects: Marc Angélil, Switzerland-USA; Meisa Batayneh Maani, Jordan Stefano Bianca, Switzerland; David Chipperfield, United Kingdom; Omar Farkhani, Morocco; Rodolfo Machado, USA-Argentina. Matthias Sauerbruch, Germany, represented UIA on the jury. Bruno Sauer, Spain and Mohamed Habib Begdouri Achkari, Morocco, sat as deputy jurors.

1st prize
Michel Mossessian (London, United Kingdom) with Yassir Khalil (Casablanca, Morocco)
2nd prize
Laura Valeria Ferretti, Maurizio Marcelloni and Valeria Botti (Rome, Italy) with Bahia Nouh (Fez, Morocco)
3rd prize
Moxon Architects, Benn Addy (London, United Kingdom) with Aime Kakon (Casablanca, Morocco)

The competition was launched on the initiative of “l'Agence du partenariat pour le progrès” (APP) with its implementing entity “l’Agence pour le développement et la réhabilitation de la Ville de Fès” (ADER-Fès), the Secrétariat d'État chargé de l’Artisanat”, the “Wilaya de la région Fès Boulemane”, the “communauté urbaine de Fès” and the “communauté urbaine de Méchouar - Fès Jdid “and the “Conseil de l’Ordre des architectes du Maroc”. The competition is one of the activities implemented through the Artisan and Fez Medina project of the MCA-Morocco, financed by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, an agency of the United States of America.
