This competition, the first such initiative on the part of a UIA Work Programme, had an awards envelope of 70 000 euro. The international jury met in Athens, from 21 to 24 September 2007, to examine the 67 projects submitted. Under the presidency of Wolfgang Tochtermann, Director of the UIA commission for international competitions, the jury was composed of the following architects: Nikos Belavilas, Jordi Farrando, UIA Secretary General, Nikos Fintikakis UIA ARES Programme Director, Manfred Hegger, Giancarlo Ius, UIA Vice-President, Emine Komut, Reuben Mutiso, Patricia Patkau and Elisabeth Siola, President of the UIA Hellenic Section. Barbosa Menezes de Sequeira, Ana Carina Bernardo Figueiredo, Marta Joao Pimenta Moreira, Pedro Miguel Fernandes Ferreira (Lisbonne, Portugal)Emergency shelters for the city of Safi in Morocco. According to the jury, this project satisfies programme criteria and provides a pertinent approach with regard to functionality, flexibility and adaptability. Of evident architectural quality, this project proposes a maximum use of renewable energy sources. The prefabricated expandable units offer a universal solution to different emergency situations and climatic regions. The energy autonomous units can be combined to form community infrastructure: reception centre, habitat, school, medical centre, etc. ![]() Joao M.
