Celebration of Cities 2:
an idea for the City
A worldwide process for urban democracy

The first "Celebration of cities" international consultation, launched in 2004 by the UIA President, Jaime Lerner, was an invitation to the architects and the students of architecture worldwide to imagine "urban acupuncture" operations to remedy the imbalances and fractures suffered by cities throughout the world.

In 2006, the International Union of Architects launched a second call to the world community of professionals and students of architecture inviting them to participate in a urban democracy process for the improvement of living conditions in cities.

The aim was to develop ideas capable of engendering positive transformations that would make cities more attractive, more welcoming, more convivial and that would improve mobility in and towards cities.

All stages of this consultation took place via internet and in the strict respect of competitors' anonymity.

Afirst selection was made at national level and was followed by a selection at international level by the jury*which met in Vancouver on 15 June 2006 to declarethe winners.

*The international jury, presided by WolfTochtermann, Director of the UIA Commission for international competitions (Germany), was composed of Gaétan Siew, UIA President (Mauritius), Louise Cox, UIA First Vice-President (Australia), Giancarlo Ius, UIA Vice President (Italy), Mauricio RiveroBorrell, UIA Vice President (Mexico), Seif Alnaga, UIA Vice President (Egypt), Jordi Farrando, UIA Secretary General (Spain), Donald J. Hackl, UIA Treasurer (USA), Tomaz Kancler, UIA Council Member (Slovenia).
