REUNITING MILAN
Milans outer ring road separates the city into two distinct entities, two cities of different periods. It was used in this project as a resource, a valuable potential that stretches along 20 km, with a constant width of 40 m, covering a total surface area of 12 000 hectares. The proposed solution is modular, a sequence punctuated with elements of street furniture, that unites the two urban fabrics through the road markings that resemble a huge zipper, symbol of both union and openness. It is also a new vision of the modes of transportation in the city.
The project for Milan is a simple idea that does not require a heavy intervention. A clearly defined urban space becomes the link between two parts of the city. The image of the zipper symbolises the opening up of multiple possibilities, the chance for new discoveries. The impact on the landscape is striking, and completely reinterprets a zone devoted exclusively to cars.
