23rd UIA CONGRESS: TORINO 2008

From 29 June to 3 July 2008, the city of Turin, in Italy, will host the 23rd congress of the International Union of Architects - UIA.

Transmitting Architecture is the theme chosen for this global event that will study architecture as a means of communication, and the means of communication proper to architecture. The congress will examine all the aspects of a profession that, on a daily basis, deals with the quality of life, the city, landscapes, and the environment, through a dialogue involving all the stakeholders.

TRANSMITTING ARCHITECTURE: CULTURE, DEMOCRACY, HOPE
Three days will be dedicated to developing the general theme. Each day will be devoted to discussions on one facet of the concept “transmitting architecture”: architecture for everyone: in the past, the present, and the future.
• 30 June:
the past, culture - architectural culture, talent, history, heritage, education.
• 1st July:
the present, democracy - urban democracy, participation, negotiation, decision.
• 2July:
the future, hope - innovation, sustainability,protecting the environment.

The programme offers a range of conferences by architects and international experts who will animate and inspire a multidisciplinary debate; these speakers include Mario Bellini, GaryChang, Odile Decq, Peter Eisenman, Massimiliano Fuksas, Thomas Herzog, Tagit Klimor, David Knafo, Kengo Kuma, Michele de Lucchi, Dominique Perrault, Renzo Piano, Hani Rashid, Joseph Rykwert, Alvaro Siza, Paolo Soleri, and Muhammad Yunus. The UIA Member Sections and working bodies will also organise debates and exhibitions.

THE CONGRESS VENUES
The heart of the congress will be located at the Lingotto, a former FIAT automobile factory transformed by Renzo Piano into a modern and multifunctional congress centre. The Palavela, restructured by Gae Aulenti and Arnaldo de Bernardi, will host a number of conferences; the Oval Pavillon, realised by Alessandro and Pino Zoppini with John Barrow, will house an immense architectural bookstore and the Architektonica construction trade fair.

REGISTRATION FEES
Registration fees have been fixed at 100 Euro for participants, and 50 Euro for students and accompanying persons.

Registrations can be made online on the congress web site until 9 June 2008, and directly on site after that date. Payments are to be made exclusively in Euro, and may be made online by credit card, Paypal, or bank transfer.
