Planning of Fiume Veneto island
The Italian promotional company Isola del Fiume, in collaboration with the municipal administration of the city of Fiume Veneto launched an international ideas competition, open and anonymous, in a single stage, for the development of the island of Fiume Veneto.
In conformity with the UNESCO-UIA regulations for international competitions, this competition received the approval of the International Union of Architects (UIA).
OBJECTIVES AND PROGRAMME

The competition site, the island of Fiume Veneto, of an area of some 100 000 m2, is currently occupied by a disused cotton mill, a hydroelectric plant and an old flour mill dating to the XIII century situated close to the island.
The aim of the competition was to plan this site in relation to its qualities, its landscape and its particular environment as well as its characteristics as an island.
The programme included housing, facilities, the renovation of the hydroelectric plant and the flour mill; the green spaces and sports facilities; a civic centre and a town hall; a museum and an auditorium as well as infrastructures associated with the new development. Given the private nature of this operation, the financial balance had to be guaranteed.
