UIA and UMAR sign a cooperation agreement

On 1 July 2008 in Turin, Gaëtan Siew, UIA President and, Patrice Genet, President of the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR) signed a cooperation agreement for the elaboration of a common programme of activities.

The programme will develop joint actions in the areas of architectural culture (heritage, urban renewal and renovation) and sustainable development (environment, energy saving, new energy sources).

Both organisations will intensify information exchanges. They will hold a bilateral annual meeting to organise joint actions, particularly through their respective working bodies. Each organisation will invite a representative of the other to participate in one of its annual meeting.

Founded in 1994, UMAR brings together architectural organisations of countries in and around the Mediterranean Basin linked by a common culture that over thousands of years has shaped their civilizations. UMAR was created as a tool for dialogue and sharing devoted to architectural quality, preservation and development of architectural heritage and improvement of environment in order to ensure a living environment suitable for Mediterranean peoples.

Relations between UIA and UMAR have been strengthened since the UIA Council Meeting in Hammamet, Tunisia in January 2006. It will continue during Louise Cox Presidency.
