ashington University in St. Louis is seeking to fill the position of Dean of Architecture in its Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. The appointment begins July 1, 2006 and is for a five-year, potentially renewable term. The successful candidate must be an accomplished leader in architecture and committed to enhancing one of the leading university programs in architecture education and scholarship. The Dean of Architecture will be a tenured full professor in Architecture and will report to the Dean of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. The Dean of Architecture will work cooperatively with other academic leaders in the Fox School, including the Dean of Art and the Director of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for recruiting and evaluating faculty, for overseeing the educational programs, and for developing and nurturing scholarly initiatives of the College of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design. The Dean of Architecture will be part of a collaborative team of academic leaders in visual arts and design building strong programs within the Fox School, engaging other parts of the University and working with community professionals. Knowing that women and members of minority groups are underrepresented in the profession of architecture, candidates from these groups are especially encouraged to apply, and the successful candidate must be committed to strengthening diversity and improving gender balance of the faculty and administration.
Founded in 1853, Washington University in St. Louis offers degree programs to approximately 6,000 undergraduates and an equal number of graduate students. The Sam Fox School, to be formally inaugurated July 2006, includes the College of Art, College of Architecture, Graduate School of Art and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design as well as the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, home to one of the nation's finest university collections of modern art.
The University is in the midst of a $60 million construction project, consisting of two major new buildings designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect, Fumihiko Maki. The new Sam Fox School will be a state-of-the-art facility that promises to be an architectural and curricular centerpiece of the University. The College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design are both academically rigorous and demographically diverse. The student body is composed of approximately 200 undergraduates and 160 graduate students with a combined full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty of about 50 and offers international semesters in Barcelona, Spain; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Florence, Italy; Helsinki, Finland; and Tokyo, Japan.
