Since its creation, the UIA has had a special relationship with UNESCO:
The UIA is the only architects organisation classified as Category A within UNESCO.
The UIA was designated by UNESCO to compel observance of the Recommendation concerning International Competitions on Architecture and Town Planning.
The UIA prepares and organises the only architecture prize awarded by UNESCO within the framework of the World Congresses and designed to award the excellence of an architecture student's project: the UNESCO Prize for Architecture.
The UIA studies specific programmes related to architecture within UNESCO, in particular the Architectural Education Programme, in which context the UIA/UNESCO Charter has been published.
