Architecture and Human Rights

Architecture and Human Rights is the theme of the 2011 World Day of Architecture that has been celebrated by the UIA on Monday, 3rd October. This theme invited reflection and action and raises a series of questions on the part of architects worldwide.

How does the architectural profession contribute to equity amongst people?

Through what type of action can the architect facilitate peoples right to access to shelter, to water, to work but also to the city, education and culture?

How can architecture and urban planning facilitate the expression of universal rights for all citizens?

In what way can architecture and urban planning contribute to a strategy against exclusion and discrimination?

Louise Cox, UIA President, addressed a message to the architects of the world for the 2011WDA:

“Retention of dignity is essential to a healthy city. We must not forget people nor lose sight of their universal rights.”

“The architects must work on this issue at community and local government levels as well as on the level of large city governments. Through its programme Action without Borders, the UIA is orienting its actions and reflections towards these issues.”
