The South African team Earth Lab winner of the international competition for the design of the Pan African Parliament

In April 2007, the South African Government invited all African architects, working and living on the African continent, to take part in a two stage international competition for the design of the Pan African Parliament. Located in Randjesfontein, South Africa, this vast parliamentary complex of some 17 000 M2 will symbolise Africa’s maturity and represent its wide spectrum of cultures and ideals. Dedicated to beauty and to the potential of African unity, the building will be built in Africa, for the Africans and by the Africans.

The competition was organised with the support of the International Union of Architects, the African Union of Architects, and the South Africa Institute of Architects.

Jury


Fifty-five projects were submitted to the jury in the first stage and five were selected to go forward to the second stage. The jury, under the presidency of Olufemi Majekodunmi, architect (Nigeria), UIA past President, was composed of: Vassilis Sgoutas, architect (Greece), UIA past President, representing the UIA, Prof. Ora Joubert, architect (South Africa), Mrs Ramatoulaye Diagne, architect (Senegal), Yassar Mansour, architect (Egypt), Dlamini Zuma, Minister of External Affairs (South Africa), Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde (South Africa), representing the South African Parliament, Murumba Werunga (Kenya), representing the Pan African Parliament, Robertvan Anraad, architect (South Africa), and of three non-voting deputy members: Khotso Moleko, architect, (South Africa), Rodney Harber, architect (South Africa), Andrew Viva Marama, architect (Malawi).

Winners


The jury met from 17 to 19 October 2007 to examine the second stage entries and the results were officially announced in Cape Town on 9 November 2007.

First prize: Earth Lab Architects (South Africa)
Second prize: Yasser Ibrahim Al-Beltagy (Egypt)
Third prize: Martin Kruger Associates and Piet Louw Architects (South Africa)
Fourth prize: Mashabane Rose Associates (South Africa)
Fifth prize: MMA Architects (South Africa)

The winning project impressed the juryby its clarity of design, elegance, strong architectural statement, and innovative concept.
