2011 Vassilis Sgoutas Prize

The scope of the prize is to highlight works, activities and actions that contribute in an efficient manner to the betterment of the living conditions of the underprivileged living below the poverty level, through improvements to their habitat and their environment.

VASSILIS SGOUTAS PRIZE 2011 –INDIVIDUAL CATEGORY
The prize was awarded to Fabrizio Carola, Italy, proposed by the UIA Italian Section
For his lifelong dedication to improving living conditions in a number of countries in Africa through the use of local building materials in a variety of structures that respect local cultures.
Two special mentions were awarded:
Francis Kéré, Burkina Faso/Germany, proposed by RIBA
For his sustainability orientated projects in Burkina Faso and Mali and his active support of the local populations in their development through the implementation of his “help to self-help” principle.
Alexander Kuptsov, Russia, proposed by UAR
For an original concept of recyclable shelters for the homeless through an inexpensive and widely applicable method.

VASSILIS SGOUTAS PRIZE 2011– COLLECTIVE CATEGORY
The prize was awarded to Espacio Maximo Costo Minimo, Mexico (lead architect: Carlos Gonzalez Lobo) proposed by FCARM
For their work in low-cost habitat in poor areas of Latin America and Mauritania that has been combined with research and experimentation with materials and training activities ensuring the transfer of technology.
Two special mentions were awarded:
Ideal Space Studio, China (lead architects: Qu Lei and He Qing) proposed by ASC
For alerting us, through intelligently designed jobsite structures, that construction workers also deserve decent human living conditions.
Savage + Dodd, South Africa, proposed by SAIA
For neighbourhood-wide inner city of Johannesburg regeneration projects developed through discussions with the community aimed at achieving social cohesion and instrumental in the clearing of vulnerable squatter areas.

The Jury met in Nanjing (China) on April 9th. It was chaired by Mauricio Rivero Borrell, 1st UIA Vice-President with Patricia Emmett, 2nd UIA Vice-President; Albert Dubler, UIA Vice-President Region I; Lisa Siola, UIA Vice-President Region II; Kazuo Iwamura, UIA Vice-President Region IV, Goh Chong Chia, UIA Treasurer, Jordi Farrando, UIA Secretary General, Cui Kai, Co-Director of the UIA Competition’s Commission and, Vassilis Sgoutas, UIA Past President.

A total sum of 8.000 euros was awarded by the jury. Donations were received from the Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation (Greece), Raj Chauhan (India), Young Ho Kim (Korea) and an anonymous donor.
