![]() Launched by the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro in collaboration with the Brazilian Institute of Architects-IAB Rio this UIA approved competition received 60 entries from 18 different countries. Gabriel Durand Hollis represented the UIA on the jury. The Rio 2016 Olympic Park will have an area of 1.18 million square meters and will hold 15 different types of sports during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. After the Olympics new real-estate ventures will be built alongside the permanent sport facilities and installations forming an area that will be a benchmark in planning and sustainability inf the city. The second prize was awarded to US team "Aquele Abraço" led by Ron Turner ; the third one to Tomás Almeida Fernandes Salgado, from Portugal. Three mentions were awarded. The jury appreciated the circulation and transport systems of the AECM project as well as the sustainable planning. According to Bill Hanway : “the park will be worthy of the world's most important urban projects, not only by its design, technology and access to sport and culture, but also in terms of coherence with the needs of its users, industry and the environment”. Bill Hanway is also in charge of London 2012 Olympic Park’s masterplan.
