Space in Extreme Conditions
UNESCO Prize for Architecture

Langzijiao, with Yangyi, Zhuwenjun, Lixin (China)
Wuhan – Flood Plain of Yangzte River

« The extreme condition was that of marginalised people living precariously on the flood plain of the Yangzte river. The solution is conceptually imaginative and based on a thorough analysis of existing conditions and potential opportunities. Construction methods utilise traditional techniques and locally available materials, enhanced by technical improvements to respond to changing water levels. The arrangement of individual, community and circulation spaces, though organised and regular, maintain and architectural liveliness and diverse village form.»

«The project also reflects very well the UNESCO mandate of enhancing 'know-how', respecting cultural diversity and promoting solidarity and citizenship through an architecture than can be constructed by the river people on the Yangzte.»
