As part of the United Nations International Conference on Human Settlements
<<Habitat II>>, which took place in Istanbul (Turkey) from 3-14
June 1996, the International Union of Architects decided to give architects
and architecture students the opportunity of contributing to this international
meeting by launching an international open and anonymous ideas competitions
on a theme approved by the United Nations, <<Convivial Spaces>>.
The aim of the competition was to encourage architects and future architects
throughout the world, to reflect on the idea of conviviality and to identify
the means through which architecture and town planning could promote convivial
relations and communication between individuals and/or the community.
Two Grand Prizes were awarded in each category
Architects:
A link between the town and the sea, at the mouth of Ilissos river, on the coast of the Faliro Bay (Greece): Maria Pylarinou, Anastassios Illias Biris, Eleni Delfino, architectes (Greece) Urban restructuration in the historic Centre of Mexico City (Mexico): Jaime Alfonso Ortiz Monasterio y de Garay, Sergio Zaldivar Guerra et Lucia Del Pilar Grajales Leal, architects (Mexico) Students :
Development of a crossover section in one of the doors of the Great Wall of China: Yonghong Li (P.R. of China)
A special prize offered by the Aga Khan Foundation was was awarded by
the jury to Ali Ozkan (Turkey).
Special mentions were awarded in both categories
within each UIA Region.
