As part of the 700th anniversary commemoration of the founding of the first university of Catalonia in 1300, the University of Lleida launched an international competition for the design of a cultural centre and library on the new Cappont campus.
The international competition was on invitation and in two phases. It was held in conformity with the UNESCO/UIA international regulations on competitions and received the UIA's approval.
THE JURY
The jury was presided by Kenneth Frampton, USA, and composed of the following architects: Gunnel Adlercreutz, Finland, UIA Vice-President; Josep Benediti i Rovira, Spain; Jaime Duro Pifarré, Spain, UIA President; Fernando Ramos Galina, Spain; Roland Schweitzer, France; Yannis Michel, Greece, UIA representative. Anton Schweighofer, Austria and Antonio Bramante Sevrano, Spain served as deputy jury members.
THE ARCHITECTS INVITED
Nine architects were invited to participate in the first phase of the competition
Three projects were selected by the jury and their authors invited to continue their study and submit a project for the second phase. At the close of the second phase, on 11 April 1997, the jury chose the project for the realisation of the building. The competition was carried out respecting the anonymity of the competitors.
Kristian Gullichsen is the author of the project chosen by the jury.
It appreciated its high architectural quality and considered it both economic
and eminently feasible. As a public institution, it will stand as a fitting
symbol for the new university and serve its users well, while greatly enhancing
the environmental quality of the left bank of the river.
