"Shelters for five churches in Lalibela"
(Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia)

The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has launched an international competition by invitation, following an open call for candidatures, for the design of structures to shelter five churches in Lalibela, Ethopia. The latter are part of a group of eleven rock hewn churches built at the end of the XII century, and included on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1978.
Confronted with the degradation of the churches, the Ethopian Government approched the European Fund for Development and a series of measures to ensure their protection was established.

The competition is organised within the framework of these measures and has been approved by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects - UIA. The aim is to find technical and aesthetic design solutions for the protection of this architectural heritage and thus prevent further damage.
