The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
has launched an international competition by invitation, following
an open call for candidatures, for the design of structures to
shelter five churches in Lalibela, Ethopia. The latter are part
of a group of eleven rock hewn churches built at the end of the
XII century, and included on UNESCO's World Heritage List since
1978.
Confronted with the degradation of the churches, the Ethopian
Government approched the European Fund for Development and a series
of measures to ensure their protection was established.
The competition is organised within the framework of these measures and has been approved by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects - UIA. The aim is to find technical and aesthetic design solutions for the protection of this architectural heritage and thus prevent further damage.
