Eduardo Costantini, Argentinian collector of works of art of contemporary Latin-american artists, decided to build a Museum, open to the public, to house his private collections and exhibit temporarily the collections of other collectors. For the design of this building he launched an international architectural competition, open and anonymous, in a single stage.
Conform with the UNESCO/UIA Recommendation on international competitions, this competition received the approval of the International Union of Architects.
OBJECTIVES AND PROGRAMME OF THE COMPETITION
The competition programme was for a preliminary project for a museum, of a total surface of some 4 200 m2, in Buenos Aires, in a sector featuring a number of buildings of a cultural and artistic nature and, notably, in the vicinity of the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the National Library and the Law Faculty of the University of Buenos Aires. The site on which the Museum will be built touches the Republic of Peru Place, the restructuring of which was to be taken into account in the treatment of the immediate surrounds and access points of the Museum, thus becoming a prestigeous element of the urban heritage of Buenos Aires.
The criteria for selection were as follows: the functional quality and specificity of the building; its symbolic significance; the suitability of the exhibition rooms for the works of art; the conformity of the building to the security standards; the quality of the services offered; the consideration of the general economics of the project and its maintenance; the performance of an intelligent system of management of the different services.
