THE WINNING PROJECT

1st prize: Meinhard von Gerkan, Joachim Zeiss (Germany)

In the unanimous opinion of the jury, the project from the team led by Meinhard von Gerkan offered the best solution to the competition objectives in proposing a clear and pragmatic urban strategy, and in creating a dynamic tension between the restored modernity and the vestiges of the past.

The jury appreciated the general strategy of the project, the treatment of the liaison between the main axis and the urban fabric, that of the secondary axis - the river, and that of the planning of the new axis situated close to the House of Parliament. The jury praised the sensitive balance created between the two axes, the subtlety of the transition between Boulevard Unirii and the House of Parliament, the quality of the urban structure recreated through a series of blocks, the scale and flexibility of which permit a wide variety of architectural "modénatures" and cityscapes and its potential stage implementation.
