The Municipality of Rome launched an international ideas competition, open and anonymous, in December 1996, for the design of an urban park on the site of the former airport of Centocelle situated to the east of the city.
The competition programme concerned the architectural and urban planning of the zone and the treatment of the green spaces; the latter being considered as an interpretation of the historic landscape of the Roman countryside using the vast potenial of local vegetation, the rural tradition of the area and the archaeological vestiges on the site.
JURY
The jury met on two occasions: the first, 30 June - 1 July 1997; the second 31 July - 1 August, and examined the 144 projects submitted. It was composed of: Bernard Huet (France), Andreas Kipar (Germany), Oriol Bohigas (Spain), Joseph Rykwert (United-Kingdom), Mario Manieri Elia (Italy), Massimo De Vico Fallani (Italy), Benedetto Colajanni (Italy), Anna Maria Leone (Italy), Stefano Musco (Italy), deputy member. In the absense of Juan Gil Elizondo (Mexico), Rasit Raci Bademli (Turkey) deputy member, became titular member and represented the U.I.A. on the jury; Pierre Micheloni (France), replaced Bernard Huet at the sittings on 30 June and 1 July 1997.
