International ideas competition
For the port district of Izmir(Turkey)

The Municipal authorities of Greater Izmir launched an international ideas competition, open and anonymous, for the redevelopment of the Aslancak-Turan district, close to the port.

In conformity with the UNESCO/UIA regulations for international competitions, this competition received the approval of the International Union of Architects (UIA).

COMPETITION PROGRAMME

The third largest city in Turkey, Izmir has a population of 3 million today and this figure is expected to reach 4 million over the coming decade. The aim of the Municipality in developing the Aslancak-Turan quarter is to enhance the contemporary image of the city and allow it to affirm its emerging status as an international city by facilitating its urban, economic and cultural expansion.

The competition site, an area of some 500 ha, enjoys a particularly favourable geographic situation. In the heart of the gulf of Izmir, it stretches along the sea-front, to the south and south-east of the port and makes up the centre of the urban agglomeration of Izmir. The Municipal authorities wish to give this industrial area a strong urban boost in harmony with subtlety and charm of the environment. The programme for this project focused on the commercial, administrative, cultural and leisure development.
