Alain Berset will be delivering a keynote speech at the ACE-UIA International Confernence on Design Competitions, 25 October 2019, UNESCO headquarters, Paris.
Mr. Berset was born on April 9, 1972 in Freiburg. He graduated in political science in 1996, and earned a Ph.D. in economics in 2005, at the University of Neuchâtel. During his ph.D., he worked as an assistant and scientific collaborator at the Institute for Economic and Regional Research at the University of Neuchâtel. He then left for the Hamburg Institute for Scientific Research as a visiting researcher, before becoming a strategic advisor in the Department of Economics of the canton of Neuchâtel. In 2006, he set up his own business as a communications and strategy consultant, working mainly for associations, businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
In 2003, Alain Berset was elected for the canton of Fribourg to the Council of States (EC), which he chaired in 2008/2009. From 2005 until his election to the Federal Council, he also held the position of vice-president of the Socialist Group. He sits on numerous parliamentary committees, including the Finance Committee, the Economics and Royalties Committee, the Legal Affairs Committee and the Finance Delegation. He also chairs the EC Office, the Committee on Political Institutions and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie. Before being elected to the Council of States, he served as chairman of the Socialist Group of the Constituent Assembly for the Canton of Freiburg. He was a member of the General Council of his commune of residence from 2001 to 2003.
In parallel to his political mandate, Alain Berset has also chaired the French Federation of Tenants ASLOCA, the Swiss Association for the Promotion of AOC and PGIs and the Fribourg Foundation "Les Buissonnets" dedicated to children and children adults with disabilities.
On 14 December 2011, Alain Berset was elected to the Federal Council. He became head of the Federal Department of the Interior DFI on 1 January 2012. On 7 December 2016, the Federal Assembly primed him as Vice-President of the Federal Council. On December 6, 2017, the Federal Assembly elected him President of the Confederation for the year 2018.
