The Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, launched the Rio 2020 Council for the first UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture programme on 10 September 2019.
Present at the event were UIA Secretary General Serban Tiganas, Region III Vice President Roberto Simon, Region IV Vice President Jong Ruhl Hahn and the Executive Director of the UIA Secretariat Sonia Cela. UIA President Thomas Vonier addressed the ceremony by video conference.
Mayor Crivella noted that the World Capital of Architecture would be a great opportunity for Rio de Janeiro. The city, he said, would benefit from the knowledge and experience of not only local experts but also professionals coming from all over the world.
The Rio 2020 Council is chaired by Mayor Marcello Crivella. Its role is to propose initiatives and coordinate the activities of the World Capital of Architecture that will take place during the entire 2020 calendar. The Council will also be composed of representatives from UNESCO, UIA, the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB) as well as local and federal government officials.
UIA Working Bodies and Member Sections are invited to participate in the World Capital of Architecture Programme by submitting proposals for events to Rio de Janeiro City Hall, via the link below.
