The UIA International Forum on Mass Tourism in Historic Cities will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, at the Heydar Aliyev Centre from 7 to 9 June 2019.
With the advent of low-cost travel, the tourism industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom. As a result, mass tourism is increasingly characterised as invasive, even destructive, often resulting in demographic shifts, local malcontent, rising prices, the dissipation of small businesses, damage to heritage, and loss of cultural identity. This forum aims to address these problems and discuss ways in which architects and other actors can help develop a greater harmony between historic towns and tourists.
Parallel events include bilateral and multilateral meetings of UIA Work Programmes and Commissions, UIA Council Meeting (10 June 2019) and UIA Extraordinary General Assembly (11 June 2019).
