UIA World Congress - 19-23 July 2020, Rio de Janeiro - Registration

27th World Congress of Architects: 19 - 23 July, Pier Mauá, Rio de Janeiro

UIA General Assembly (UIA Members only): 23 - 26 July, Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel

UIA Council meeting (UIA Council only): 19 & 26 July, Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel

From July 19 - 23 2020, Rio de Janeiro will host the 27th edition of the UIA World Congress of Architects. The Congress and exhibitions will be hosted at Pier Mauá. Pier Mauá is one of Rio de Janeiro's largest event venues, covering 40,000 square metres at the heart of the Porto Maravilha.

The triennial congress is organised under the auspices of the International Union of Architects (UIA), attracting approximately 15,000 participants from around the world. The Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB) is responsible for organising the Brazilian editon of the congress in 2020.

RIO2020 UIA is the biggest global event for architecture and urbanism, and its purpose is to stimulate the exchange of ideas and experiences between architects, urbanists, students, urban thinkers, public employees and other interested groups, encouraging new debates and solutions.

Alongside the Congress, Rio de Janeiro has also been designated UNESCO-UIA 2020 World Capital of Architecture. A new joint UNESCO-UIA initiative, the World Capital of Architecture is a title held by a city for 1 year, during which they organise a programme of events to celebrate architecture and built heritage, as well as to raise awareness about the key issues of architecture today.

Institutions and cultural sites, such as museums, galleries, squares and venues, will host discussions and exhibitions throughout 2020 in honour of this title. Agreements have been made with more than 40 institutions for exhibitions, forums, business expos, talks, workshops, seminars, competitions, projects and networking and social events.

Every Brazilian organisation involved in architecture, urbanism and landscaping is supporting the event, as well as the Pan-American Federation of Associations of Architects (FPAA) and the International Council of Architects of Portuguese Language (CIALP).

The call for academic papers and professional projects is now available on the congress website.
