Architecture and the eradication of poverty

Within the framework of the World Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (1997-2006), the International Union of Architects launched an international competition in 1997 on this theme. The competition was open to architects and architecture students worldwide.

386 projects from 55 countries were submitted to an international jury which met in Bucharest (Romania) at the invitation of the Union of Architects of Romania (UAR), which organised the adjudication and exhibition of the projects. The exhibition of the prize-winning projects was presented in Lausanne during the commemoration of the UIA 50th anniversary, then in Berlin and later in Beijing during the Union's World Congress. A publication on the competition was produced for this occasion.

Edited by SIMETRIA and the Union of Architects of Romania, the book presents the 2 award winning projects, the 6 projects given special mentions, and the 45 given mentions.

UIA: History

L'UIA 1948-1998

This book, compiled and edited by Pierre Vago, is published by Editions de l'Epure with the support of the UIA French Section.

Fifty years after the founding of the Union in Lausanne, this book attempts to respond to a number of questions:
What were the goals of the founders? What were the themes that brought about a federation of architects? What actions has the UIA undertaken? What has been and will be their impact on the profession? What positions has the UIA accepted or refused to take with regard to architecture in the world?
The texts are in English or French, depending on the authors who are active participants within the Union.
The 208 page book, 190 x 140 mm format, contains 50 illustrations.
