The UIA world congresses are a forum for professional and cultural exchange among all the world's architects, and bring together thousands of participants from around the globe. Each event focuses on a pertinent theme, developed by eminent personalities from the international architectural, planning, and construction fields. Debates, exhibitions, tours and festivals make them the perfect meeting place for colleagues and friends, and students of architecture are always welcome.
24 congresses have been held since the UIA's creation in Lausanne in 1948. Durban hosted the 2014 congress on the theme 'Other way architecture'. The following congress will take place in Seoul, Korea, in 2017, on the theme 'Soul of the City'.
UIA congresses are organised by a host UIA Member Section. Congress bids are submitted to the UIA general assembly and selected by vote six years in advance of the event.
