Asian Culture Complex

This international project competition was organised by the Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism for the construction of a new Asian Culture Complex in Gwangju.

This competition took place over a single stage and complied with UNESCO-UIA regulations. It was approved by the International Union of Architects (UIA).

Theme and objectives

The city of Gwangju is a model of Asian democracy and, as such, can contribute to the construction of a culture based on equality and human rights for all people of Asia.

The objective of this competition was to promote Asian values in the field of the arts and culture. 

The government of the Republic of Korea initiated a development policy for the city of Gwangju, situated in the southwestern part of the country, in order to provide a hub for Asian culture and promote the national cultural industry. 

 

Key criteria

The complex had to be designed to fulfil the following objectives: 

  • Provide facilities to strengthen the role of Gwangiu as Asia’s cultural centre and create a strategic base for contemporary arts and culture;
  • Develop a space for the promotion of cultural values by combining arts and industry;
  • Create a venue for research and for practice of educational reform, incorporating cultural and artistic creativity;
  • Create a cultural powerhouse for the development of Asian culture and the promotion of the regional economy.
