UIA Mourns the Passing of Past President Rod Hackney

19/08/2025

The International Union of Architects (UIA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Rod Hackney, UIA President from 1987 to 1990 and former President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Born in Liverpool and raised in North Wales, Hackney pioneered community architecture, placing people and participation at the heart of design. His first major project in Macclesfield, where residents worked together to save and improve their Victorian terrace homes, became a model for similar initiatives across the UK and beyond.

As leader of both the RIBA and the UIA, he promoted architecture as a tool for social responsibility and community empowerment. His legacy continues to inspire architects around the world.
