UIA International Innovative Design for Health Awards 2026 — Winners Announced

The International Union of Architects (UIA) has announced the winners of the 2nd edition of its International Innovative Design for Health Awards, organised by the UIA Public Health Work Programme (PHWP) and sponsored by MillerKnoll. The award recognises distinguished and innovative architectural design solutions and research that help protect, promote, and restore human health.

 

Built Work Category

1st Prize — Center for Health (Copenhagen, Denmark) by Dorte Mandrup A rehabilitation and treatment facility shaped by daylight, natural materials, and spaces for movement and community.

2nd Prize — Office and Laboratory Buildings, Medical University of Graz (Austria) by Riegler Riewe Architects A coherent inner-city campus integrating work, teaching, and leisure environments.

3rd Prize — Children’s and Adolescent Hospital Freiburg (Germany) by Health Team Vienna, Albert Wimmer ZT-GmbH and Architects Collective ZT-GmbH A patient-centred design uniting cutting-edge medicine, research, and teaching under one roof.

Honorable Mention — Viljandi Hospital (Estonia) by Bakpak Architects, Planho and DAGOpen

 

Research Work Category

1st Prize — Within Reach: Restoring Spatial Sovereignty and Social Integration of Hospice Care within Urban Neighborhoods (USA) by Yixuan Liu and Yilin Zhang A study reimagining hospice care as part of everyday urban life in high-density cities.

2nd Prize — Loneliness and the Built Environment by Fernando Nieto Fernández (Tampere University, Finland) and Rosana Rubio Hernández (CEDEX-CEHOPU, Madrid, Spain) Research exploring how architecture can address loneliness and support social health.
