President’s Message for 2026: Towards a future we can respect

The UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona has announced the first group of confirmed speakers. This initial list brings together leading international figures whose work has significantly contributed to contemporary architectural thinking and practice, in alignment with the Congress theme “Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition.”
The International Union of Architects (UIA) played an active and visible role at COP30, held in Belém, Brazil, in the heart of the Amazon—a region vital to global climate stability.
Passes are now on sale for the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026, which will take place in Barcelona from 28 June to 2 July 2026.
On December 9–10, the Engineers and Public Works Contractors Fund (TMEDE) hosted its 2nd International Conference, “Redefining the Future Horizons: Designing Tomorrow’s Sustainable Strategies,” in Athens.
Released this year, The Great Arch (2025) is a French–Danish biographical drama directed by Stéphane Demoustier, telling the true story of Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, an almost unknown Danish architect who won the international “Tête Défense” architectural competition.
The conference “Accessibility and Inclusion in Public Space: Contemporary Demands and Practices”, held on Saturday, 29 November 2025, at the Chamber of Lasithi in Agios Nikolaos, organised in collaboration with the Lasithi Architects Association, the Association of Greek Architects (SADAS–PEA), the CRISIS Research Laboratory of the University of Ioannina, and the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete.
At the state-level honours event of the Victorian chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA Victoria), Allen Kong was awarded the 2025 Victorian Enabling Architecture Prize.
The UIA has formally adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as a guiding framework for its policies, programmes and professional activities. The decision was unanimously approved by the UIA 176th Council meeting in Seoul, South Korea, marking an important milestone in the organisation’s commitment to human rights, cultural diversity and inclusive architectural practice.
Last Friday, 28th November, the second in-person meeting of UIA Region 1 took place, this time in Paris, at the new offices of the International Union of Architects (UIA).
