The UIA has launched the 5th edition of the Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Awards, organised by its Architecture for All Work Programme. These international awards celebrate projects and research that remove barriers, reduce segregation, and create accessible, user-friendly, and socially sustainable environments through high-quality architectural design.
Awards will be presented in four categories:
- New buildings
- Refurbished existing buildings (including historic ones)
- Public and open spaces
- Research on the theory or practice of universal design
The competition highlights works that improve the user experience through thoughtful scale, form, materials, colour, light and sensory characteristics; that promote usability, orientation, dignity and safety; and that embrace human diversity.
Key dates include:
- 24 February 2026 – Submission deadline
- 4 April 2026 – Regional Nomination Panels
- 5 May 2026 – International Jury
- 18 May 2026 – Winners announced
Global Medal Winners in each category, together with Honourable Mentions, will be recognised. Medal recipients will be invited to present their projects during a special seminar at the UIA World Congress of Architects in Barcelona (28 June–2 July 2026).
By recognising excellence in universal design, the UIA seeks to promote architecture that enhances quality of life and creates welcoming environments for all.
