International Women’s Day 2026

08/03/2026

On 8 March 2026, the International Union of Architects (UIA) joins the international community in marking International Women’s Day under the United Nations theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”. This year’s call resonates deeply with our profession. Architecture shapes the physical frameworks of daily life; it gives form to our collective aspirations and reflects our shared values. It must therefore stand firmly on the principles of equity, dignity, and inclusion.

The built environment is never neutral. It can either perpetuate inequity or foster opportunity. As architects, we hold a responsibility that extends beyond design excellence: we contribute to the conditions in which rights are exercised, justice is experienced, and communities flourish. Advancing equality for women and girls is not peripheral to our mission, it is intrinsic to building sustainable, resilient, and humane societies.

Across the UIA’s Member Sections worldwide, women architects continue to lead transformative projects, advance research and education, safeguard cultural heritage, and innovate in response to climate and social challenges. Their work enriches cities and rural landscapes alike, strengthens professional practice, and expands the boundaries of architectural thought. The diversity of their perspectives enhances our collective capacity to respond meaningfully to global challenges.

Yet we recognise that structural barriers persist within the profession and the societies we serve. Equal access to opportunity, fair representation in leadership, equitable recognition, and safe and inclusive working environments remain objectives that demand continued commitment. The UIA’s longstanding Policy on Gender Equity in Architecture remains a guiding framework, reaffirming our commitment to address these challenges through concrete measures across our global network.

In this spirit, the call to Give to Gainoffers a powerful complement to this year’s theme. Progress in gender equality requires intentional investment — of mentorship, visibility, trust, and opportunity. By giving space for women’s leadership, by supporting emerging professionals, and by ensuring equitable participation in decision-making processes, we gain a stronger profession and more inclusive communities. What we invest in equality returns to us as innovation, resilience, and shared prosperity.

The UIA encourages all Member Sections to continue sharing best practices, fostering intergenerational dialogue, and advancing concrete measures that enable women architects to thrive at every stage of their careers.

On this International Women’s Day, we honour the achievements of women architects across our global community and renew our collective resolve to translate principles into action. By upholding rights, advancing justice, and acting with purpose, we contribute to shaping environments, and a future , where every woman and girl can fully realise her potential.
