The International Union of Architects (UIA) mourns the passing of James A. Scheeler, from the USA, a highly respected colleague and a devoted contributor to the global architectural community.

James Scheeler dedicated many years of service to the UIA, guided by a strong belief in international cooperation and the advancement of the architectural profession. His long-standing commitment, generosity of spirit, and clarity of vision left a lasting mark on the organisation and on all those who had the privilege of working with him.

His involvement with the UIA began during the 1993–1996 mandate, when he joined the UIA Council as the Alternate Member for Region III. He continued his engagement through successive mandates, serving both as Alternate and later as Full Council Member for Region III from 2005 to 2011. Over more than two decades of active participation, he earned the respect and trust of colleagues across regions and cultures.

James also played a key role as Co-Director of the UIA Professional Practice Commission, where his leadership contributed decisively to the successful outcomes of the Commission’s work. His involvement in the development and dissemination of essential reference documents — including the UIA Accord on international minimum standards of professionalism in architectural practice, the UNESCO–UIA Charter for Architectural Education, and the UNESCO–UIA Validation System for Architectural Education— represents a significant and enduring contribution to the profession worldwide.

The UIA extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. James Scheeler’s contributions will not be forgotten, and his memory will continue to live on within the UIA community and the wider architectural world he served with such dedication.
