27/03/2026

The International Union of Architects (UIA) convened its 179th Council Meeting in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, bringing together council members and representatives from across Region III and beyond. The meeting served as a key platform for strategic dialogue, decision-making, and the advancement of the Union’s global agenda.

Hosted by the Federación de Colegios de Arquitectos de la República Mexicana (FCARM), under the leadership of its President, Architect Miguel Sosa Correa, the event was marked by outstanding organization and warm hospitality, reflecting Mexico’s strong commitment to architecture and its active role within the international community.

A central component of the program was the 5th FCARM Interdisciplinary Narratives Forum “Voices – Women who Transform” held on March 13, 2026. This forum provided a multidisciplinary platform for dialogue, bringing together professionals, academics, and institutions to explore new perspectives in architecture and the built environment. It reinforced the importance of collaboration, critical thinking, and cross-disciplinary exchange in addressing contemporary global challenges.

Within the framework of the Forum, a significant milestone was achieved with the signing of an agreement between the Mexican Committee for International Architectural Practice (COMPIAR) and the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE). This agreement builds upon longstanding efforts toward mutual recognition of professional qualifications between Mexico and Europe, strengthening international cooperation and professional mobility.

The signing ceremony was attended by key representatives, including UIA President Architect Regina Gonthier, as well as former UIA Presidents Sara Topelson and José Luis Cortés Delgado, highlighting the importance of this initiative within the global architectural community.

In addition to the official sessions, participants engaged in cultural activities and visits that showcased the rich architectural and cultural heritage of Mérida and the Yucatán region.

The 179th Council Meeting reaffirmed the UIA’s commitment to fostering international collaboration, promoting architectural excellence, and supporting the development of inclusive, sustainable, and culturally grounded built environments worldwide.

The UIA extends its sincere appreciation to FCARM, its partners, and all contributors whose efforts ensured the success of this important international gathering.
