The International Union of Architects (UIA) proudly celebrates the theme “Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design” for World Architecture Day 2024. This day highlights the importance of empowering young architects to lead the profession into the future, while also acknowledging the vital role architects play in developing inclusive urban settings that foster sustainable environments.
Building on this theme, the active participation of young architects is essential in shaping resilient urban settings that champion social justice and ethical practices. Through their involvement in urban planning, adaptive reuse and revitalisation of existing structures, as well as the introduction of innovative policies for upgrading informal settlements, and the integration of circular economy principles and sustainable construction techniques, they play a significant role in shaping cities that focus on the wellbeing of citizens and the environment, thereby ensuring a better future for the next generations.
The UIA calls on all Member Sections to actively support this year’s theme by encouraging and including young architects in their events, especially on World Architecture Day. The UIA urges all architects’ organisations to provide platforms for young professionals to voice their ideas and contribute to the growth and evolution of the profession. The Union also invites Member Sections to share how they plan to celebrate this day and engage with young professionals in their respective regions, so that the UIA can showcase these efforts globally.
In light of this, the UIA Council is happy to announce the upcoming UIA Young Architects Competition, themed “The Future of the Profession – Empowering the Next Generation in Participatory Urban Design” in keeping with this year’s UN World Habitat Day 2024 theme, “Engaging youth to create a better urban future.”
Architects under 35 from around the world are invited to participate in this UIA competition, proposing creative solutions that address the evolving needs of our urban environments. The competition focuses on the active role that young architects can play in designing sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally friendly cities.
An international jury will assess the entries and winners will be announced during the Venice Biennale. The winning entries will be exhibited at Palazzo Zorzi from May 8 to May 15, 2025, marking the UIA’s first institutional participation in the Venice Biennale. This exhibition will showcase the creative ideas of young architects, emphasising their impact on shaping the future of the profession and urban environments.
The competition aims is to inspire young professionals to engage in urban planning and development, offering their unique perspectives to the field. It also aligns with the theme of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 exhibition organised by the UNESCO Office in Venice, titled “Multifunctional Architecture to Enhance the Experience of UNESCO Sites”.
By promoting this competition, the UIA reaffirms its commitment to supporting young architects and fostering meaningful dialogue about the future of the profession.
Let’s empower the next generation to create a brighter and more sustainable future!
